Why Does a Laptop Overheat?
Causes and Solutions

Is your laptop overheating, is the fan constantly running at high speed, is performance dropping or does the device shut down suddenly? In this guide we explain all the causes of overheating and the ways to solve it permanently.

Is It Normal for a Laptop to Get Hot?

All laptops produce heat while they are running — this is normal. The processor (CPU) and the graphics card (GPU) convert energy into heat while working. The cooling system (fan + heat pipe + thermal paste) expels this heat and keeps the components at a safe temperature. The problem begins at the point where this system becomes inadequate or fails.

Normal operating temperatures: on the CPU 40-75°C is normal, above 85°C is hot, 95°C+ is dangerous. Similar ranges apply to the GPU.

Why Does a Laptop Overheat? — 6 Main Causes

1. Drying Out of the Thermal Paste

The thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink dries out over time, cracks and loses its heat-conducting property. This is the most common cause of overheating. It generally appears after 2-3 years. The solution: replacement of the thermal paste through professional thermal maintenance.

2. Blockage of the Fan and the Air Duct

Dust, hair and pet fur build up over time on the fan blades and in the air outlet channels. Airflow decreases and the heat stays inside. Symptom: the fan runs constantly at high speed but the device still stays hot.

3. Fan Failure

If the fan motor is worn or its bearing has failed, it runs at low speed or does not run at all. Symptom: the fan sound is different from normal (crackling, buzzing) or there is no sound at all but the device is very hot.

4. Incorrect Usage Habits

5. Background Processes

Programs running without your noticing (updates, virus scans, crypto-mining malware) can keep the processor at 100% continuously. Check this in Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).

6. Hardware fault

Hardware faults such as evaporation of the fluid inside the heatpipe or bending of the cooler block can also cause overheating.

The Harms of Laptop Overheating

How Can You Prevent Laptop Overheating?

Have Thermal Maintenance Carried Out

Have the thermal paste replaced and the fan cleaned once a year (every 6 months with heavy use).

Use It on a Flat, Hard Surface

Always use the laptop on a flat, hard surface such as a desk. Avoid using it on a bed or on your lap.

Use a Laptop Cooling Pad

Using a laptop stand or cooler with an external fan can reduce the temperature by 5-10°C.

Check the Background Applications

Check the CPU usage in Task Manager. Close unnecessary applications.
