The battery of a laptop is the part that wears out fastest. An average notebook battery loses a noticeable proportion of its capacity after 300-500 charge cycles; in everyday use this generally corresponds to two or three years. A laptop with a worn-out battery is no longer portable and remains tied to a desk and a power socket.

How Do You Know That the Battery Is Worn Out?

The feeling that "the battery is dead" is often correct, but not always. The following symptoms indicate that the battery really does need to be replaced:

• Shutting down instantly when unplugged: The device shutting down as soon as the plug is removed, even when it shows 40 per cent, is the clearest sign that the cells can no longer hold a charge.
• Charge percentage jumping: An indicator that suddenly drops from 60 per cent to 15 or climbs to 100 per cent within minutes shows that it is the cells, not the battery calibration, that have degraded.
• The lid does not close fully, the device wobbles on the desk: This is the classic symptom of a swollen battery. The bottom case bulges outwards, the trackpad becomes stiff or starts clicking of its own accord.
• Warning from the operating system: The Windows notification “consider replacing your battery” or a low full charge capacity value in the battery health report.
• Overheating: Heating confined to the battery area alone may be a sign of cell imbalance.

Swollen Battery: The One Fault That Should Not Wait

As the lithium cells in laptop batteries age, they produce gas inside. This gas swells the cell, and a swollen battery presses first on the bottom case, then on the trackpad, and finally on the logic board and the base plate of the keyboard. In advanced cases the display lid no longer closes properly.

Continuing to use a device with a swollen battery both increases the cost of the repair and carries a genuine fire risk. If there are signs such as the lid bulging, the trackpad surface rising or the device rocking on the desk, switch the device off, unplug it and stop using it. On devices of this kind the dismantling too calls for particular care; if a swollen cell is punctured, it reacts. We carry out the dismantling in a controlled manner.

The Problem Is Not Always the Battery

A device not taking a charge and a battery being worn out are not the same thing. There may be four different faults behind the complaint "it is plugged in but does not charge":

• Adapter: An adapter that appears to supply voltage but drops under load will not charge the battery. This is the first place that is checked by measurement.
• Charging port: A DC jack that is loose, pushed inwards or has cracked solder joints loses contact. In this case the solution is Notebook charging port repair, not the battery.
• The charging circuit on the mainboard: When the charging controller or the power MOSFET fails, the battery will not charge even if it is sound. This is a Motherboard Repair is the issue.

For this reason we do not recommend battery replacement before a diagnosis. When you bring the device in, we measure the number of charge cycles, the actual remaining capacity in relation to the design capacity and the output of the adapter; after showing you the result, we then take the decision.

Which Battery Is Fitted?

Batteries with different part numbers can be fitted to the same laptop model; capacity, cell count and connector orientation vary. There are three things we check before replacement:

What Do We Do After The Replacement?

• First charge cycle check: After the new battery is fitted, the device is fully charged and it is checked whether the capacity value is read correctly by the operating system.
• Heat check: The temperature of the battery area is measured during charging; if there is abnormal heating, the battery is not left fitted.
• Checking the bottom chassis and the screws: If there is deformation of the case on devices from which a swollen battery has been removed, we report it.
• Disposal of the old battery: Swollen batteries are disposed of in accordance with waste battery regulations; we do not recommend keeping them at home or throwing them in the bin.
