SCREEN FAULTS

Broken Laptop Screen:
What Gets Replaced, What Does Not?

A laptop with a broken screen gives most people the feeling that “this is the end of it”. Yet in the great majority of the cases we see at the service centre, the rest of the device is completely sound and the only thing that has changed is the panel at the front. This guide explains how to tell what has broken by looking at your screen, what you should expect before coming to the service centre, and in which situation you should switch the device off and wait.

First determine what exactly is broken

The sentence “the screen is broken” corresponds to three very different situations at the service centre, and distinguishing between them determines from the outset how much work will be involved.

Panel breakage

There are black patches, coloured vertical lines or a spider's web pattern within the image. The panel must be replaced.

Crack in the glass only

On touchscreen models there is a crack in the top glass but the image is flawless. On some models only the glass is replaced.

Lid/hinge damage

The panel is intact but the lid has come apart and the hinge is loose. Here it is the housing and the hinge that need repairing.

Cable or circuit board

There is no image or it flickers, and there is no physical mark on the screen. The problem may not be in the lid.

The most practical way to make this distinction is to connect the laptop to an external monitor or a television via HDMI. If the image on the external screen is perfectly clean, the computer itself and the graphics card are sound; the problem is on the lid side. If there is a fault on the external screen as well, the fault is not in the panel but deeper.

The answer to the question “Can just the glass be replaced?”

This is one of the questions we hear most often, and the answer depends on the design of the model:

When you give us your model number, we can tell you which design you have and which option is possible before you even bring the device in.

The price of continuing to use a broken screen

If there is still an image, people naturally say “it will do”. At the service centre we often see how this ends:

The best course of action is to switch the device off the moment the screen breaks and bring it to the service centre without closing the lid. If it is not possible to keep the lid open while transporting it, place a thin cloth or a sheet of paper in between.

What we do during the replacement

Screen replacement is an operation that looks simple from the outside but leads to a second instance of damage when the order of the steps is disrupted. The order we follow is as follows:

Panel quality: what to look out for

There can be considerable quality differences between panels that fit the same model. When we ask for your approval, we state clearly which panel will be fitted and how any alternatives differ. The points you should look at are:

When something other than a replacement is discussed

Not every broken screen leads directly to a replacement. In the following cases we discuss the device as a whole:

You can bring your device with the broken screen to our centre in Çankaya, send it by courier, or write its model via WhatsApp and find out the price first. Fault diagnosis is free of charge and no work begins without your approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can only the glass of a broken screen be replaced?›
On classic, non-touch laptop screens the glass and the panel form a single unit; there is no separate “glass” layer, and the panel therefore has to be replaced completely. On touchscreen models, by contrast, the touch glass and the panel are two separate layers, and on some models only the top glass can be replaced. We can tell you from the model which construction you have.
The screen is broken but an image still appears; may I carry on using it?›
It is possible for a short time but not advisable. In a broken panel the liquid crystal spreads over time; a black stain that is small on the first day can cover half the screen within a few weeks. In addition, when you close the lid the edges of the crack press against the keyboard and enlarge the damage.
Does a screen replacement affect the data on the device?›
No. A screen replacement is an operation in which the disk is not touched at all; your files, your programs and your settings remain exactly as they are. Nevertheless, as before every repair, we recommend that a backup of your important data is available.
How long does the replacement take?›
When the panel is in stock, the work is completed the same day, on most models within a few hours. Rarely available high-resolution or touch panels may require procurement; in that case we state the time precisely after the diagnosis.
There is no image at all — is the screen definitely the problem?›
No, it must certainly be tested. The absence of an image may be caused by the panel, but it may equally be caused by the display cable, the backlight circuit or the video line on the logic board. Connecting the device to an external monitor and checking whether an image is obtained makes the first distinction; if there is an image on the external screen, the problem is on the lid side.
