What You Should Do First

In cases of liquid contact, what determines the outcome is how quickly you reach the service centre. Liquid causes two separate kinds of damage in electronic circuits: a short circuit at the moment of contact, and afterwards corrosion that continues for days. The latter progresses even while the device is switched off, and the longer you wait, the lower the chance of repair. What you need to do, in order, is as follows:

• Switch the device off immediately: Do not wait for a proper shutdown; pull the power cable out of the socket.
• Do not attempt to switch it on again: This is the most frequently made and most costly mistake. Applying power to a damp circuit causes permanent damage.
• Do not lay the device down or shake it: The liquid spreads into clean areas.
• Do not use a hairdryer: Hot air pushes the liquid further inside and damages the components.
• Do not rely on the rice method: On an iMac with an enclosed casing this is of no use whatsoever and merely wastes time.
• Bring the device to the service centre the same day: Corrosion advances the longer you wait; time directly determines the cost.

Which Liquid Is How Harmful?

Clean water is the least harmful, because when it dries it leaves no conductive residue behind — with a prompt intervention the chance of recovery is high. Tea, coffee and soft drinks, on the other hand, contain sugar and acid and therefore leave behind a layer that is both conductive and corrosive; if this layer is not cleaned, the device will break down again within weeks even if it works for a while. Salty and alcoholic drinks are the most aggressive group. For this reason saying “it works, there is no problem” is misleading; the case cannot be regarded as closed until the residue has been cleaned.
